Tracks for Model Trains

Tracks for Model Trains

The tracks for model trains are like bread to butter. Sure, you can have all the butter in the world, but without the bread to put them on, youre going to end up with mostly melted butter. Ok, so trains dont melt, but still, the trains will just pile up without anywhere to run. So the lesson is: never underestimate the power of bread, and tracks.

As you may already know, model railroading is usually very particular about scale especially when youre talking about trains and tracks. In model railroading, scales are the relative sizes of the models to the actual thing and are denoted by letters like O, HO, and N. Because these model locomotives come in different sizes, their tracks do as well. This size in tracks is usually determined by gauge. Gauge, simply put, is the distance between the two metal rails of a track. To simplify your hobby, manufacturers usually make track gauges correspond to train scales: an O gauge track will take O scale models, and HO tracks will take HO models. Because of this, some have begun using gauge and scale interchangeably. They are different, however. For example, some S scale trains, a scale smaller than O scale, are known to have wider wheels to accommodate O gauge tracks.

Tracks usually come in two forms: the common two rail track or the three rail track. The three rail track came along as manufacturers found them safer. However, some hobbyists dont like the idea of their model tracks having unrealistic third rails. The third rail has found a lot of use though as they also make the wiring of other electronics onto the track possible. These would include lights or sounds that activated when the train passed or even automatic switching tracks. If you already own a train set, check to see if they run on three rails or two. The three rail models wont work on two rails without being altered.

Tracks also come in different types, as they are modeled after real tracks. They usually come in segments that you can piece together to form a basic railroad. The basic kinds of segments are the straight segments and curved segments. Theyre pretty self explanatory and, as you can probably imagine, you can already build an oval track out of just these segments.

Actual train tracks are hardly as simple as just an oval though and, for the more serious hobbyists, more segments are needed to make their dream track layouts. There are crossing segments that can create intersections in your tracks. There are turnouts or switches, segments that switch the tracks for your trains. These segments allow you to create multiple paths for your trains to go on. Almost every kind of track is reproduced in miniature for you to expand your model railroads to whatever you can dream of.

These segments are very easy to use and come ready to be put together straight out of the box. However, due to their modular designs, they are not very flexible. A curve track will curve at a fixed angle no matter what you do. For that extra bit of detail, enthusiasts often turn to the flex tracks. These tracks can be flexed into different shapes, allowing you to make whatever angle curve you want. Be careful though! There is a reason why the segmented curves have limits to their angles. Not all trains can traverse tight turns and some will derail when trying to navigate too tight a turn. Before you go about making crazy curves, try knowing the maximum turn radius your train can take.

These tracks are already enough to make your dream layout a reality but there is still one type of track that you can never do without the feeder track. This special segment of track is what connects the entire layout to an electrical power supply (an AC transformer for three rails, a DC power pack for two). Without it, all the fancy curves and turnouts wont work since the trains wont run.

With this knowledge, you can now make your dream train tracks come to life almost as easy buttering your toast.

Top Scrapbooking Tips

Top Scrapbooking Tips

Once you have discovered the fun of scrapbooking, you will discover the endless layout possibilities, the numerous tools available, and the dizzying array of material for enhancing your page. Here are a few practical scrapbooking tips to help you save time, eliminate frustration and get the most out of your investment.

Basic Tips

1. Acid Free Everything: The name of the game here is preservation. So make sure you are using paper that will last. Most will say either acid or PVC free on the front. Also, use an adhesive tape that comes with a tape runner instead of glue. Any of the tapes sold by scrapbooking companies or websites should be acid free. 2. Work Outside the Box: Ok, in this case you will work outside the book. Good albums have removable pages. I recommend adding pages only after they are completed. Its easier to have a single page in front of you while you cut, adhere and manipulate materials, than your entire album. Also, you have more flexibility to move pages around. 3. Be Thematic: Choosing a theme helps to unite your choices of paper, color, quotes and embellishments. Whether its a holiday like Halloween, a place like The Farm, or time related like Age of Innocence, you can weave this theme throughout your related pages, and gain inspiration from them at the same time. 4. Focus Focus Focus: Each page should have a focal point. It may be a single photograph, a journal entry or a series of pictures, working together. Know where you want people to look when they first view your page and work outward from that point.

Tips for Tools

As much as we women like to tease men about their obsession with power tools, many a scrapbooking gal gets tingles all over when she unwraps a new cutter, shape maker or package of rainbow assorted markers. Lets face it ladies, the tools make the project. Here are some tips on how to choose the right ones.

In addition to your most basic tape pair of sharp scissors, straight and decorative trimmers can make a croppers life much easier. Trimmers are basically small paper cutters that help you achieve perfectly straight or wavy lines. As some one who cant cut straight to save my life, my cutter is a must have. Cutters that come in round, oval, heart-shaped and other patterns are also fun.

Every scrapbooker needs a good set of writing utensils in a variety of colors. You will want both fine-tipped and broad pens for different needs. Pens to reduce red-eye and photo labeling pencils are also handy. Finally, stencils that allow you to create arcs, swirls and half circle for headings and labels will be useful.

The Icing on the Cake

The materials you use to decorate your page will make it uniquely yours. Beginning scrapbookers are often overwhelmed by the many choices that exist. Here are a few favorites to get you started.

Fastening brads are those tiny gold pieces that go through the holes in paper and flatten down on the other side. These are available in stars, hearts, and almost any shape or color you can imagine. Using brads to fasten ribbons, ticket stubs or memorabilia is fun and inexpensive.

Scrap paper and your gel pen can be used to create a quilted appearance by making stitch-like marks around the outside of the paper. Another easy embellishment is to punch holes in a piece of paper and weave ribbon in and out of it.

Anything is fair game for your scrapbooking needs. Probably the best scrapbooking tip of all is to look at everything from a scrapbookers point of view. You will suddenly see pages of music, menus, church bulletins, fabric swatches and cheap jewelry in a whole new light.

Top 3 Don'ts Of House Landscape Design

Top 3 Don'ts Of House Landscape Design

Because of the ever-changing market and the prices going up every day, we now spend a lot less on gardening services than we did ten years ago. Instead, we try to do everything by ourselves. This is not a bad thing when it comes to learning a new hobby or saving a dollar or two. But in reality, an experienced landscaper would do a given job much faster and with a higher quality. Most of the times, paying someone to do it, will be actually cheaper than doing it yourself.

There are many areas which require expertise and prohibit any compromises when it comes to price or quality. Electrical and plumbing are among the most important jobs because any flaw in the system could result in damage to the property or even worse - a health risk. Landscaping, on the other hand, could be done by both a professional or someone with little to no experience who only read a few books on landscaping. There are so many things which are not specified in the books and people overlook those easily. Local climate and wildlife, for instance, won't appear in every writing. That is why expert help is not obligatory but it is definitely recommended. If you still choose the DIY approach, there are three mistakes which are quite common among inexperienced people. If you are aware of them, you will also be able to avoid them, so let's see them.

First Mistake: Straight Lines. Go With Nature's Flow Instead.

A common misconception of unprofessional landscape "experts" is to use straight lines in everything they design. 90-degree angles, equal spaces between the plants, bushes cut into even shapes - just a few of the bad examples. Instead of relying on uniformity, try to follow the natural shapes and curves. That also applies to any man-made elements in your garden. For example - the walkway. Avoid using concrete as the main material. It is not only aesthetically unpleasant but it is also not very durable as a material, it is more susceptible to high humidity and low temperatures. To make things easier, simply go with nature's flow. Use flat stones or pebbles to shape a pathway. Nature has already found a way, you can do it too!

Second Mistake: Front Lawn Ignored. But it Is Still There.

You will be surprised to know how many homeowners will only work on their backyard without doing anything with their front lawn. There are some reasons why this happens. When building and designing the actual property, many decide to leave a wider area in the back. This leaves them with a large variety of options - from garden sheds, gazebos, water features (like fountains and tiny ponds) to really huge projects like soccer or rugby fields. Thus, there are fewer options available for the front yard, and things don't have to be that way. Patios and front porches have been key landscape elements for many years now and both have their functional and aesthetic values. You can also try different shrubs and even trees in case your front lawn allows it. This will make your home appear much cosier and will eventually increase its selling value.

Third Mistake: Short-term Planning. Think ahead.

Consider some future development of your landscape. All trees and shrubs will sooner or later change their size and that's when troubles occur. Keep in mind that unplanned landscaping works might lead to more serious problems such as exterior damage to your property or damage to the underground utility pipes and cables. So, plan at least 20 years ahead when developing the design of your yard.

Even if these seem to be pretty basic, an independent landscaping company has made a research that proves about 60% of non-professionals still make one or more of these top 3 mistakes. You won't believe how many people are affected and have to deal with issues caused by, generally speaking, poor landscape planning and design.

Tips for Using Schleich Miniature Figurines in a Rainforest Diorama

Tips for Using Schleich Miniature Figurines in a Rainforest Diorama

Using Safari or Schleich miniature figurines can give your rainforest diorama added realism. Both Safari and Schleich offer a great variety of wildlife toy figures. Here are some tips on how to take any rainforest diorama to the next level.

To build a realistic rainforest diorama, you will need a basic understanding of the structure of a rainforest. A rainforest has four strata, or layers, starting at ground level and going upwards toward the sky.

The first is called the "ground layer". It has very few plants. Small trees and half grown trees make up the next layer, called the "under story". Finally, the uppermost layer of leafy dense, leafy branches, called the "canopy". Stretching above the canopy are a few very tall trees that make up the "over story". Some over story trees (known as emergents) can be as much as 150 feet tall!

The canopy is the layer where you will find the most life, from insects to animals, and fungus. This layer is from 75 to 130 feet off the ground. The under story also supports the growth of a vast network of branches and leaves that average 20 to 100 feet in height. Many animals also live in the under story. Ground level growth is thin, with a lot of open space, since there's not much light (99% of sunlight is blocked). Animals such as deer, peccaries, and jaguar inhabit the ground layer. Each of these animals along with many others can be added as Safari or Schleich toy figures.

You will probably find that to show all four rainforest layers in scale with miniature figurines such as Schleich toy figures would mean building a diorama over five feet tall. Your best option is to compensate by focusing on just one stratum of the rainforest at a time.

Let's focus on the canopy. Start with a sturdy base, such as a piece of hardboard about 18 x 20 inches. For treetops, use real branches 10-15 inches tall. Choose sturdy ones with a lot of interesting looking twigs branching off. Stick the bottom ends into large lumps of clay that can air dry (not clay that must be baked, such as Sculpey).

There are several ways to create realistic looking leaf effects. Glue large chunks of green sponge between the branches to look like areas of leaves. You can also use shredded paper or Spanish moss spray painted bright green. Add detail with a few hand-cut leaves sticking out on the nearer branches of your diorama. The branches toward the back can be less detailed.

Don't forget that interesting epiphytes such as bromeliads and orchids live on the branches of canopy trees. Create three dimensional models of these from paper or clay or cut pictures out of magazines and glue them on. Long, vines can be created using green or brown yarn or string. Use tiny pieces of crumpled colored tissue paper for flowers. Add a layer of green leaf effects across the "floor" of your diorama (this is the top of the under story level). Now you are ready to add miniature figurines for the animals.

Typical animals found in the canopy of the rainforest include sloths, monkeys, toucans, tree-dwelling anteaters, snakes, lizards and sometimes cats. Many of these species are available as Schleich toy figures, which contain a high degree of realism, or from other manufacturers such as Safari.

These miniature figurines are often weighty for their size, so they will need to be wired on with extra bracing behind them. Try platforms constructed from Popsicle sticks. Hide the edges with leaf material. Dabs of hot glue will keep them from wobbling. A few animals can sit on the "upper branches" of the under story - that is, on the floor of your diorama.

Your diorama is most interesting if it tells a story. Show animals in action, if you can. Position a snake so that it is about to strike a bird. Show an anteater nosing about among the bromeliads.

Now create a signboard. It should give the title, the date, and your name. If it is a school project, you may want to create smaller labels identifying the animals and plants in your scene. Be sure to take lots of pictures!

Tips for Storing Melissa and Doug Wooden Toys and Legos Building Blocks

Tips for Storing Melissa and Doug Wooden Toys and Legos Building Blocks

Ever stepped on a Lego barefoot in the dark? If you have (and you didn't immediately consign the whole minefield of such crippling objects to the nearest available garage sale!), you are probably eagerly searching for appropriate storage containers and ideas. Those wooden building blocks, dollhouse accessories, and Hotwheels cars aren't much better to encounter on a dark night, and need a bedtime home as well.

The good news is there are many options, suitable for every d'(c)cor and lifestyle. From empty packing boxes to lined wicker, from a washed ice cream bucket to color coded stacking drawers, there is something that will meet every family's needs.

For those who wish to be boldly creative and independent, there are a variety of make-at-home options. First, the old stand-bys, shoe boxes and washed plastic food containers such as ice cream buckets or margarine tubs. Simply wash and rinse well. Allow to dry, then turn them upside down on a piece of newspaper and spray paint them and their lids a nice color.

Next, be sure to label them, container and lid alike with the contents, such as "Lego Blocks, Large" or "Melissa and Doug Wooden Toys" or "Necklace Beads." The kids will enjoy helping out, perhaps even using up some of those beads which get so easily scattered by gluing them on as decoration. A tip from experienced moms is that for a really successful container system, you should also label the shelves where the containers go. This way, clean up for the kids is as easy as a matching game.

For those who wish they had time for all that, but must purchase something instead, the options range from stackable plastic storage drawers from Wal-Mart to designer wicker baskets from specialty outlets. These really add an artistic touch and are very convenient, even for toys that have a lot of smaller pieces like Melissa and Doug wooden toys. The key is to have each container lined to keep the small pieces from falling into the wicker.

Another great idea is a system of sturdy hanging pegs mounted at child-height. Toys then get stored in tote bags or drawstring bags and hung neatly on the pegs each evening. Some moms have successfully used over-the door shoe bags. The individual pockets are just the right size for hot wheels cars or wooden building blocks like Discovery Toys blocks or Melissa and Doug wooden toys.

All of the above are great ideas, but my personal two favorites are the Box4BLOX and the Drop Bag. The Box4BLOX is a unique item. It's specially designed to keep different size Legos sorted and organized. There are four stackable trays with open grids in the bottom, which actually filter the Legos through based on size. The bottom layer holds the tiny pieces which otherwise get lost so easily, and there is a lid to close the top.

Best of all, not only are the Legos easily contained in this neat and tidy box, but when the child goes to play with them, he does not tend to dump the building blocks all over the floor to find what he needs. He doesn't have to. The pieces are ready-sorted for him. He now gets to spend more time in building and less in hunting for the right piece.

The Drop Bag is another ingenious idea from one smart mommy. This is something you can make yourself in just an hour or two. You'll need a large circle of cloth, 44 inches or 60 inches in diameter and a piece of rope six inches longer than the circumference of the fabric.

Sew a casing into the perimeter of your fabric circle. Run the rope through inside the casing and tie the ends together. Spread the fabric out on the floor and instruct the child to stay on the fabric when she plays with her Melissa and Doug wooden toys or Legos building blocks. When she's through, it's a snap to lift the edges, pull the rope to close it into a drawstring bag and hang the bag on a peg.

Thrift Stores Can Have The Best Things To Sell On Ebay

Thrift Stores Can Have The Best Things To Sell On Ebay

Image source: https://www.bitbond.com/resources/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/How-to-find-the-most-profitable-things-to-sell-on-eBay-Amazon-2-620x349.png

If you are tired of trying to find the best things to sell on eBay at yard sales or with a drop shipper, perhaps it is time to consider shopping at thrift stores. This idea is certainly not a new one! Dealers from all over the country find great items for resale at thrift stores!

It is relatively easy to spot a resaler at a thrift store. They're usually the ones loading up their cart with name brand jeans and shoes of all sizes.

You may be thinking that these resalers must know something special. They do! They know that the old concept of "buy low, sell high" is still alive and well! Thrift stores are excellent places to get a lot of inventory at a low price.

Of course it is very important not to simply buy everything you can grab and put in your cart and expect to sell it

And, remember that even with the most careful of intentions and selection of inventory, not everything you buy will be a winner.

Don't let uncertainty about buying something that's not a winner stop you. Always keep in mind that no matter what, your risk is low because thrift stores, by their nature, are so inexpensive that you won't have spent (or lost) a lot of money.

So, what are some of the best things to sell on eBay that you can find in a thrift store?

The possibilities are as endless as the inventory you'll see. Here are a few quick ideas to get the ball rolling, and to get your mind thinking outside the box: high end blue jeans, wrist watches that are different or interesting looking (you'll probably have to invest in a few watch batteries to make sure they run before you sell them), old tee-shirts (think "concerts"), larger shoes that are in good condition, vintage curtains or other decor from the 1960's or 1970's.

Another way to spot something good to sell on eBay is to look for items that don't quite fit in with some of the other items on the rack.

Let's say you are browsing through the ladies' shirt section. You'll probably see more than a few common store brands. But, while you are going through the shirts, you just might see an unusual print shirt by a high end brand that would normally go for $50 in a department store! Do you suppose someone might like to have that particular item for $14.95 on eBay (especially if you add "free shipping")?

Be vigilant about the item's condition. Would YOU want to wear a shirt with stains, tears, or pulls? If you wouldn't want to wear it, your customer probably doesn't want it either!

The same thing goes with old housewares. Sure, that old Pyrex coffee pot is wonderful! But, if it has a chip in the top or in the handle, you may want to pass it by.

But fear not! Due to their very nature, that thrift store is likely to have a whole new load of some of the best things to sell on eBay next week when the new donations come in!

Three Self-Nurturing Reasons to Start a Hobby

Three Self-Nurturing Reasons to Start a Hobby

Writer Anna Quindlen sums it up nicely: "You cannot be really first-rate at your work if your work is all you are." Most working moms I know want a life--a life that includes work but is not completely dominated by it. We want to be fully engaged in, and feel passionate about, all aspects of our lives. Yet we often find it difficult to give ourselves permission to pursue our interests --activities or hobbies-- outside of work and family obligations. Perhaps we think engaging in our hobbies is too self-indulgent or not important and we fail to create adequate space and time for them.

But when you take up a hobby, whether it's training for your first 10K run, singing in a choir or creating funky jewelry in your spare time, you reap the benefits of inspirational self-nurturing. By helping you to find a better balance and more meaning in your life, hobbies make you feel good. Here are five great reasons to stop procrastinating and start that hobby you've been contemplating.

1. To play and feel lighter
Playing means enjoying yourself for more than a minute or two, for the sole purpose of finding pleasure. It's something you do just for you and it makes you feel good physically. Just look at your children to remind yourself of the magical powers of play. When kids play you can see, hear and feel their happiness and contentment...it practically vibrates off them. As we grow older, we often lose our playtime to the responsibilities of adulthood... working hard and being productive, striving to make a difference and tending to others. Yet, when you make playing a priority in the form of a hobby, you can face life and work with more enthusiasm and lightness.

2. To become more interesting and interested
Expanding your interests allows you to focus on things outside of your normal routine. Hobbies beat out boredom. There is excitement and challenge in learning how to paint, write short stories or sail. Committing to a hobby, whether it's adventure traveling or joining a book club, will give you something to look forward to and spur you on to achieve greater goals. When you participate in an activity that is engaging, your passion and enthusiasm becomes contagious and makes you more interesting to others.

3. To enhance self-esteem
Many hobbies allow you the opportunity to gain new skills, giving you a sense of accomplishment and confidence that makes you feel better about yourself. Hobbies that involve physical activity such as hiking, gardening and mountain biking strengthen your body and coordination. And getting in better shape can also make you feel good. Creative hobbies like pottery, quilting and writing poetry fuel your imagination and rid you of that "something is missing" feeling...and that makes you feel great.

Next time you are wondering whether taking up a hobby is a good use of your time, think about all the benefits that come from branching out, exploring something new and nurturing yourself. Give yourself permission to pursue an interest or an activity that is just for you. And see what happens when you dedicate a little time for your own personal growth.

Things to Do with Remote Control Helicopter

Things to Do with Remote Control Helicopter

Times are changing faster than they ever did before and so are toys. Thanks to the technological advancements that we have seen in just a few years, todays toys are things that are not only for children. Many adults today are enjoying passing times with these toys. One trend that has caught on very well with both the young kids and the adults is having fun flying a rc helicopter. A long time ago they were very small simple toys but today they are bigger, faster and better. Some of them are so sophisticated that they are practically the same as the life-size choppers. Here are some of the things that you can do with them today.

Run battle simulations This is one of the best ways to pass time with your friends if you all have toy choppers. You can come up with different situations in which you all go into battle with each other. Those who have more skill in handling their models will usually come out on top but there is also the intelligence factor. There are numerous situations that you can create to make sure that you do not get bored. One thing you have to do however is to make sure that you keep it safe. You do not want to hurt yourself or those around you. Do not damage your toy birds either.

Race with friends This is one of the most traditional ways to have fun with your remote control helicopter. Gather up friends and you can create a great obstacle course for you guys to race in. you can have prizes for winners and other fun things that come along with having a competition.

Carry out construction simulations Depending on the type of heli you bought, you can have great fun constructing various buildings or setups. You may have to buy a few things like the cranes to attach to your bird but it is all worth the hours of fun that you will get out of it.

Shoot a movie/video Today, sharing of movies has become such a great fad. In reaction to this, cameras are getting better and better yet smaller than they ever were. Depending on the size of camera and remote control helicopter that you have, you can today shoot a movie or just simple great videos for fun. Nowadays, even serious Hollywood professionals are taking advantage of this option when making their blockbusters. They can go in tiny spaces or at angles and heights that would be impractical with the life-size models.

Run assembly competitions Due to the fact that more and more people have become enthusiasts of these toy birds, another trend that is catching on is assembling them on your own. There are now competitions where you can bring and compete with other people on who can assemble a remote control helicopter the fastest. These are great events that churn out lots of cash and enjoyment for entire families.

Go boat flying Go onto a boat and fly your remote control helicopter over the water. The rocking of the boat creates a different situation to fly in. you also cannot just land anywhere so it improves your landing skills.

Thimble Collecting A Fun and Educational Hobby

Thimble Collecting A Fun and Educational Hobby

Many of the most interesting hobbies involve collections of a certain object. Many people collect stamps, porcelain dolls and other figurines, and some people even collect Pez dispensers and matchbooks from restaurants around the country or the world. For decades, thimbles have also been a popular collectible. Thimbles vary widely in value depending on where they are from, the materials they are made of and their condition. Commemorative thimbles are also produced with collectors in mind. With the wide variety of thimbles on the market and stories attached to them, collecting thimbles is a fun hobby for all ages.

Many types of thimbles appear in thimble collections, and thimbles vary by type (work or display), material, era and design. Thimbles have been made of many different types of materials through the centuries, including gold, silver, bone, mother of pearl, ivory and brass. Many thimbles dating back to the late 1800s are actually stainless steel thimbles dipped in silver in order to prolong the thimble's useful life. This practice of dipping the thimbles in silver was known as the Dorcas method, and Dorcas thimbles have a value all their own even they were developed strictly for work purposes.

Thimbles will vary in value according to era as well as the type of material and condition. A circa-1840 set of three commemorative thimbles celebrating the marriage of Victoria and Albert and the birth of the Prince of Wales has recently been advertised on Christie's for $400-$500. Newer thimbles made of less expensive materials and commemorating more recent events typically retail for about $10-$15 when ordered online, whereas new thimbles made of silver with an enamel design may sell for over $100. For many, this begs the question, "How do I know if it's silver?" This is a good question to ask, since Dorcas thimbles in mint condition may look exactly like pure silver. When perusing thimbles at antique malls, the easy way to tell a pure silver thimble apart from a silver-coated thimble is to hold a magnet to it. Thimbles made of any other metal will be drawn to the magnet, but a pure silver thimble will not. People thinking of buying silver thimbles online for their collection are advised to buy from a reputable dealer; check with Thimble Collectors International for guidance.

Collectible thimbles produced in recent years are often lacquered in order to have a smooth surface on which to place a tiny screen print. While plain, well-worn metal thimbles can be valuable as historic artifacts, the ones with the highest resale value are generally the ones with fancy designs, particularly those commemorating an historic event. Commemorative thimbles include a great many dedicated to the births of members of the British royal family, including the 2013 birth of Prince George to William and Kate. Thimbleguild.com even sells a thimble commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Dalai Lama's first visit to the United Kingdom.

While a large thimble collection - or even a small one consisting solely of gold and/or silver thimbles - can cost a small fortune to amass, thimble racks and cabinets cost less and are the ideal way to display one's thimble collection. Brand-new thimble racks holding 20 thimbles can be found for as little as $8 online, and display cases for larger collections can cost $50 or more. Thimble racks and cabinets generally come fully assembled and with felt interiors and glass doors to prevent dust accumulation. If these seem too costly, any other small figurine display case will do, although it would be a good idea to add felt to the interior to keep the thimbles from coming in contact with hard surfaces.

Thimble collecting can be a good hobby for a number of reasons. As with stamp collecting and collections of other types of figurines, each thimble presents a different sort of history lesson: when and where did it come from? What is it made of, was this material commonly used at the time, and if so, for what purposes? Since thimbles are a manufactured product, each thimble is or was made within a particular historical context with regards to both the materials and, if the thimble was not manufactured for work purposes only, the event that it commemorates. Older generations of collectors can look back fondly upon events from their youth through a thimble collection, and younger ones have an opportunity to learn about major historical events through commemorative thimbles.

Thimble collecting can be a fun reason for visiting antiques dealers or even for combing through an older relative's sewing box. What collectors find is often educational and just plain fun and exciting to be able to add to one's collection. When it comes to starting and expanding a thimble collection, the sky's the limit. For a fun and different hobby and a potentially valuable collection to pass on to younger generations, consider thimble collecting!

Websites such as the Thimble Guild make it very easy to begin a thimble collection and you do not need a lot of money to start collecting them. In addition, because of the internet, sites including the Thimble Guild will help you look for thimbles for your collection. If you want to find the "older" thimbles, you will often find them in antique shops or, sometimes, at car boot fairs.

If you want to make a start and get involved in this ever popular hobby then why not visit the Thimble Guild website and see what they have on offer. However, be prepared to be hooked on this hobby - as you learn more about the unique and true gems that a collector can sometimes just stumble.

You will very soon become a bona find a digitabulist and will likely begin looking everywhere you are for that special or one of a kind thimble.

There's Great Fun in Face Painting on Kids!

There's Great Fun in Face Painting on Kids!

Face painting is an art that can be undertaken by anyone, amateur or professional. It's a fun way to entertain your children on a boring afternoon. Rain or shine, you can bring smiles and laughter with this simple entertainment. If you're brave - and you know your kids best - you can even allow them to paint each other!

High school teens have enjoyed painting faces for pep rallies for quite some time. They paint their mascot paws, team logos or names, school names and colors on their faces for both fun and fundraising. It's an easy way to earn money for the junior prom, senior class or an upcoming class trip. They set up booths at local arts and crafts shows, midnight madness sales, and during special school functions. Low prices keep the student customers coming back, along with their friends.

Face painting is also used as a way to earn money for special needs, such as a charity event. It can help fund an account for someone hurt in an accident or give financial support to someone who has a chronic illness, such as a heart condition, cancer, or multiple sclerosis.

The ideas for kids face painting are limited only to your imagination. When painting faces of young children, you must have patience, allow time for fidgeting, and keep your design simple. It helps perfect your talent to practice the pre-selected designs in advance of an event. Most children are happy to be your guinea pig for your practice sessions.

Ideas for designs come from many places: popular cartoons, movies, coloring books, the animal section in your local library or bookstore, magazines featuring flowers, catalogues, and toy stores. Try asking the neighborhood kids for their ideas. They know what's 'hot' our there on their scene and what they'd be happy having drawn on their own faces. Kids can be extremely helpful and imaginative. Ask them to show you their favorite characters or to choose pictures from their own book collection.

Fingerprints are always fun. Try painting a fingerprint of a parent on a child's face, using the person's own finger, of course. And in reverse, you could even paint a toe print of a child on a parent's face! Paint the name of a favorite pet on a kid's face. Try dipping a willing pet's paw into the paint and stamping it onto the kid's face.

For quick fun, try face painting stamps. Draw a picture of a face onto a large piece of paper and have the child stamp a design on the face. Regular rubber stamps can be used for this, of course. But for actual human face use, there are special face stamps.

Lastly, where should your face painting take place? Try shopping malls, hospitals, birthday parties, charity events, festivals, school events, flea markets, church functions, craft shows, parades, and open house events. Hobby stores may offer classes for kids face painting or might allow you to teach a class yourself. After all, you'd be appealing to the younger shoppers along with their parents, and that would bring in more business.

Face painting is fun and creative. Think about it ... you can have a lot of good times with this activity.

The Ultimate Guide to Creating New Friendships, Part 1

The Ultimate Guide to Creating New Friendships, Part 1

Studies have found that having friends is one of the most important contributions to having a happy and healthy life. Forming friendships isnt difficult, but it does take some effort.

Friendships Come in All Shapes and Sizes

Some friends we know from childhood are with us our entire lives. Others come into our lives for a short time, and our lives are enhanced. With some friends, we feel close right away, and were are able to share intense experiences soon after we meet. Other friendships develop slowly, perhaps over years.

Some people we keep close contact with frequently. Other friends drift in and out of our lives. I have a friend who I met when I was pregnant with my daughter 30 years ago. We saw each other off and on over the years, losing track of each other, then seeing each other in front of a health food store or crossing the street downtown. Now weve vowed not to lose track of each other again. We have each others phone numbers and e-mail addresses, and its easy to stay in touch.

The more you see a person on a regular basis, the more likely a friendship will flower. You can see someone at the same caf, bump into them at the gym, or share the same class with them over a semester. You start with a simple hi, move to short conversation and then to longer and more intimate ones.

Youre also more likely to form a friendship with someone who lives nearby. Being physically close can make a big difference. If the person is open and friendly and enjoys talking, developing a friendship may happen quickly.

There is a greater chance of becoming friends if you share the same interests, beliefs and values. Although you dont have to agree on everything, if you look at the world in the same way, this is an excellent basis for friendship. You may have similar jobs, family situations, education, ages, spiritual beliefs, or economic status. If their personality is like yours, all the better!

Where to Meet People Who Can Be Your Friends

There are many, many places where you can find people to start a friendship with. Look around you and see if any of your neighbors are similar to you. It can be your neighbor in the next apartment or someone down the street who likes to do what you do. Start a conversation and see where it leads.

What about making contact with people from your past? You can call an old school chum and find out what theyre doing now. You can e-mail each other or, if you live close by, call them and have lunch to catch up. Sometimes this can lead to a closer relationship.

You may find an interesting friend at work, someone who shares your interests or who you enjoy spending time with. During breaks and lunchtime, you can discover if there is any connection. If you ask them to go to a movie or attend an event with you, youll see if you have fun together.

Of course, if youre taking a class, you already know you have something in common. Talking during a break or after class will help you know whether or not you want to make a deeper connection.

One of the best ways to meet people like yourself is to be involved in activities youre interested in. It can be a hobby that youre gaining knowledge about, a physical activity that you enjoy doing, learning a new skill, a lecture youre attending about a topic youre passionate about, or volunteering for a cause that you feel strongly about. You can look for one-time events such as lectures, home shows, concerts, tournaments, or sports events. Or you can look for something more long-term such as political activist meetings, book clubs, meditation groups, yoga classes, or religious services.

When youre attracted to something, others who are similar to you will find you interesting. You can exchange stories and experiences and even create new ways to do things together.

Exercise

At least once today, compliment a friend on their appearance, their smile, or a decision they have made. Not only will they appreciate your compliment, you will feel good for having enhanced their day.

The Top Six Reasons Why People Are Interested In Celebrity Scandals.

The Top Six Reasons Why People Are Interested In Celebrity Scandals.

A number of us will always be fascinated with celebrity scandals given that it provides us a chance to let our minds enjoy a fantasy world that is a lot more glamourous than our own. We can dream that the attractive celebrity we look up to may bump into us one day and we will go for coffee and a walk in the parkland. We may fantasise about the celebrity's world in an effort to take us away from our own uninteresting lives.

A number of us love to read tales to do with celebrities and see them on the news when they started out as the boy or girl next door and have made it large. This gives us hope that it could happen for us some day. Perhaps a director or producer will pluck us from the street while we are doing out weekly shop and make us stars. In reality, we know that this is unlikely. But its just a daydream we like to indulge in.

If this doesn't seem like you, maybe you are one of those people who relish celebrity scandals - someone who needs to experience a rush of adrenalin when you get word that a well known celebrities life is in shreds or that they have perpetrated an clumsy offence. It may remind you that they are real people after all, or may privately make you feel just a little bit glad if you were a tiny bit covetous.

If you are fashion conscious and like to keep up with novel styles you will probably be a celebrity observer. There are no better places than on celebrities to notice the succeeding vogues to be worn by the stylish set. You may also distinguish fashion cataclysms, which make you feel much better as you distinctly have more desirable taste and wouldn't be caught dead in whats being worn.

Now and then we may be concerned in celebrity scandals for gentler grounds than those cited above. Once in a while we follow the dramas of celebrity scandals and start to feel caring ideas about them. Possibly we are older and wiser than a young celebrity who is pressurized and experience a instinctive impulse to want to help them. Or we may keep an eye on a celebrity going through a trauma that we have gone through, only unlike them we would likely have been out of the spotlight. When this takes place we can feel compassion for them and their experiences.

Celebrities may also help to lay emphasis on matters which need researching. They may suffer from an ailment and in doing so bring support and attention to the health related needs of other sufferers like them. We can follow and hope that they recoup and care for them from afar.

For the past year I've been compiling a list of model train stores for my model railroading website. These shops all look like a lot of fun to visit, but what are the most popular? Here is a list for the states of Virginia and West Virginia.
The most popular model railroading shops (based on online chatter) in Virginia and West Virginia are:

3. KMA Junction in Manassas, Virginia

2. Piper Hobby in Chantilly, Virginia

...and the most popular shop for model trains in Virginia and West Virginia is...

1. Locust Grove Trains in Locust Grove, Virginia

Hobby shops not quite making my top 10 were Awesome RC and Hobbies in Fredericksburg, Virginia; Craftech Hobby Shop in Norfolk, Virginia; Davis Hobby Supplies in Portsmouth, Virginia; Debbies RC World in Chesapeake, Virginia; Dunn's Toy and Hobby in Manassas, Virginia; Hobby Works in Fairfax, Virginia; Leesburg Hobbies and Collectibles in Leesburg, Virginia; Rail Yard Hobby Shop in Roanoke, Virginia; Staunton Trains and Hobbies in Staunton, Virginia; Train Depot in Manassas, Virginia; Train Town Toy and Hobby in Ashland, Virginia; Walt's Hobby Shop in Petersburg, Virginia; Cain's Trains and Hobbies in Bunker Hill, West Virginia; Fountain Hobby Center in Charleston, West Virginia; Kid Country Toys in Charleston, West Virginia; Nitro Hobby and Craft Center in Nitro, West Virginia; Patrick's Trains in Wheeling, West Virginia; Stephens Outdoor Railways in Vienna, West Virginia; and West Virginia Hobbies and Crafts in Teays, West Virginia.

So, there are lots of great model railroading shops from all over Virginia and West Virginia, but clearly Virginia dominated the list with nine in the top ten. This isn't too surprising as Virginia is a bigger state with a bigger population and more hobby shops than West Virginia.

So lots of great model railroading shops from all over New York in the top 10. Empire Northern Models probably made it to the number one spot by having a popular website as well as a fantastic retail store. I was a bit surprised that Trainland, where "Bobby Bacala" from the TV series the Sopranos purchased the Blue Comet wasn't higher on the list because of that publicity, but I guess that was a few years ago.

I compiled this list by searching for the hobby shops listed on a number of search engines and ranking them by the number of web pages, discussion forums, photos, videos, etc that are available online. I further screened this list to include only pages that mentioned model railroading.

When in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan be sure to visit some of the excellent railroading museums including Durand Union Station in Durand, Michigan; Michigan Transit Museum in Mount Clemens, Michigan; End-O-Line Railroad Park and Museum in Currie, Minnesota; Gopher State Railway Museum in Shakopee, Minnesota; Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth, Minnesota; Minnesota Transportation Museum in Saint Paul, Minnesota; Old Depot Railroad Museum in Dassel, Minnesota; Twin City Model Railroad Museum in Saint Paul, Minnesota; East Troy Electric Railroad Museum in East Troy, Wisconsin; Fennimore Railroad Historical Society Museum in Fennimore, Wisconsin; Mid-Continent Railway Historical Society in North Freedom, Wisconsin; National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

I compiled this list by searching for the hobby shops listed on a number of search engines and ranking them by the number of web pages, discussion forums, photos, videos, etc that are available online. I further screened this list to include only pages that mentioned model railroading.

See a complete list of Model Train Shops in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, at www.ModelTrainsWithLarry.com which has complete contact information for each shop including an address, phone number, and map to the store.

The Thimble and Thimble Collecting Today

The Thimble and Thimble Collecting Today

A thimble is a cap that fits over the finger to protect it when pushing a needle during sewing. The word, derived from Middle English, literally means "thumb shield."

The thimble has a long history. The oldest existing thimble is Roman, found in the ruins of Pompeii. It is bronze. However, the Etruscans, who pre-date the Romans, are known to have made bronze thimbles. Primitive thimbles of bone and leather probably also existed because thimbles have been used by every known culture. These thimbles did not survive the centuries.

Through the years, thimbles have evolved in a number of ways. Both the materials used and the means of production have changed. Thimbles have gained new uses and become primarily decorative and collectible rather than merely practical.

Early thimbles had to be sturdy because homespun fabric was coarse and needles were rough and unfinished. It was difficult to push the thread through the fabric so a strong, thick bronze or iron thimble, called a "skep," was required to prevent injury. Each thimble was shaped individually by pounding metal into a mold. The dimples in these early thimbles were applied by hand and are uneven. These primitive, shallow thimbles were dome shaped and had no rim. Some had a hole in the top to stabilize them during the casting process. It was hard to keep them on the finger and the metal bled and colored the sewer's hand.

By the 15th century, fabric became more finely woven and needlework became more refined. Thimbles became thinner. These thimbles were usually made of brass and imported from Nuremberg, a brass-making center. Simultaneously, new methods of producing thimbles were introduced. Thimbles were made from sheet metal. The new thimbles also contained decorative motifs. The cap was separate and attached to the cylinder later. These new thimbles were taller and the top was flatter.

Another type of thimble called a "sewing ring" or tailors' thimble was also produced during this time. It was a shallow thimble with no top. This type of thimble is used when the needle is pushed through the fabric with the side of the finger rather than the tip.

Also during this period, the lowly, utilitarian thimble began to dress up in jewels and precious metals and lead a secret life as a gift item. Wealthy women did needlework together, so it was natural for Elizabeth I to commission a jewel encrusted thimble as a gift.

During the 16th and 17th century Holland became the new seat of thimble production. However, in the late 17th century, John Lofting moved thimble production to Islington, England where the brass-working industry was already established. He began to produce thimbles in a scale unheard of before. Later, he moved his factory to Great Marlow, and used water power to double production. By the early 18th century, he was producing 2 million thimbles annually. But he too succumbed to progress and thimble making moved to Birmingham, England by 1800.

The composition of brass also improved during this period. A new formula made it more malleable and suitable for a different manufacturing process called "deep drawing" that used less metal. This lowered the cost.

In the 16th century, manufacturers began to produce thimbles in silver and other precious metals. Because a silver thimble is softer than the needle it is meant to push, the cap had to be reinforced with iron. This highly collectible type of thimble is called a "Dorcas."

Thimbles were also made of porcelain by companies such as Spode and Wedgewood. Although considered more decorative than durable, they were used to sew on silk.

The dawn of the Victorian era marked the start of thimble collecting. Roads had improved and people began to tour. The Great Exhibition, a kind of world's fair, was held in Hyde Park, London and attracted large crowds. A commemorative thimble was issued to mark the event. The concept of commemorative thimbles caught on with collectors. It was also at this time that advertising thimbles became popular.

In Victorian times, a silver thimble was regarded as a highly appropriate gift especially for a man to give a woman. Victoria women carried a chain-like device called a chatelaine, to which sewing items such as small scissors and a needle case could be attached. Thimbles were enclosed in a decorative thimble case that could be attached to this device as well. Sometimes the couple would remove the cap from a thimble so it could be used as a ring.

We are all aware that sewing is the primary use of the thimble. But did you know that a slightly larger thimble, usually two ounces, was used to measure spirits? And did you know that 19th century prostitutes used them to tap on their clients' windows and Victorian schoolmistresses used them to knock recalcitrant students on the head?

Today, thimbles are still used in quilting, French hand sewing and other types of decorative needlework. As hand sewing has become less common, the practical use of thimbles has declined. Although they have become largely decorative, collectors' interest in modern thimbles has not waned. Thimbles originally created in silver are being reproduced in pewter thanks to new processes, developed in the 1950's that allow more detailed design. New series of thimbles are being issued to commemorate everything from football teams to Disney characters. Every tourist destination offers souvenir thimbles to tourists. Many probably don't even know how to use them.

Thimble collecting is an extremely popular hobby worldwide. Many thimbles are reasonably priced and readily available. Men, women and children collect them. Some collectors are interested in the history of thimbles while others collect them for their decorative value. Collectors' clubs have sprung up locally. The internet now connects collectors all over the world. Collectors' societies have their own web pages. Collecting has also spawned a booming cottage industry in display racks, cabinets and domes.

The lowly thimble has become a star. Some admire its humble origins and some its newfound incarnations. It is one of the most versatile and practical tools ever invented, born of necessity.

The Right Way to Start the Restoration Project on a Motorcycle

The Right Way to Start the Restoration Project on a Motorcycle

Motorcycle restoration is a type of hobby that can be very time consuming and also one that will require you to have a lot of patience. It is also a type of hobby where you may need to spend a lot of money on. If this sounds like a lot of work for you, then you might want to consider getting a different hobby. However, if you don't care about the work involved in motorcycle restoration and you have all the time and money for it, then you will surely love restoring motorcycles especially vintage or classic bikes.

The great thing about restoring a motorcycle is that you can cut corners during the restoration process and get your bike on the road as soon as possible. This is because you can always get your bike back on the workshop and replace the second rate parts you installed with genuine originals.

So, you really don't have to spend a lot of money when you are restoring a motorcycle. You can always install second rate parts and replace them later with genuine originals or high quality replicas when you get the money for it.

You also have to keep in mind that motorcycle restoration is more than just a spray can paint job. It's also more than just buying it a new set of wheels. You have to remember that restoring a classic or vintage motorcycle means that you have to fix everything about it including the engine. This means that you should have more than just a pretty bike. When restoring a motorcycle, you need to have a mechanically sound and reliable motorcycle as well, which you can safely ride around town.

In order for you to restore a motorcycle completely, you need to disassemble it down to the frame. You also have to give it a thorough clean, rebuild or replace parts, re-chrome, professional body work, and paint. If you do a poor paintjob on the body of your motorcycle, especially on the gas tank, you'll end up with a bad restoration work on an otherwise great restoration project.

The project will also involve re-lacing of spoke wheels as well as new seat foam and cover. You should also keep in mind that the engine is very important. You may need to overhaul or rebuild the engine as well as make some upgrades on the electrical system.

If you are trying to restore a vintage or classic motorcycle, always remember that finding parts for it will be very hard to do. In fact, some people travel across the country or even abroad just to get a hold of the part they need in order to restore their bike.

Once you get all the parts you need to restore your bike, you have to remember that after you strip down the bike down to its frame, the first thing that you need to do is take the engine in to an engine shop. Here, they will be able to rebuild your engine and make it as good as new again.

These are some of the things that you need to do in order to start your motorcycle restoration project the proper way. Always remember that motorcycle restoration is one of the best types of hobbies today. It's also a type of hobby where you are really investing on the bike. Once you get your vintage or classic bike fully restored, you can sell it on auctions for profit.

The Qualities of a Good Stamp Collector

The Qualities of a Good Stamp Collector

Stamp collecting is one hobby that is loved all over the world. Aside from the wonderful experience that stamps give to the collectors, it is also a very inexpensive hobby.

Stamp collecting does not only involve collecting stamps per se but also other stamp-related pieces such as envelopes and packages which contains the stamps. Would one believe that stamp collectors are revenue-generating agents for countries which make limited edition stamps?

There are collectors who are involved in collecting stamps for the sheer fun of it. There are those who have taken stamp collecting into a higher level and have taken a philatelic way of stamp collecting. Philately is basically the study of the intricate details of a stamp. Many have become philatelists because they have seen the value of the stamps.

If one is starting to collect stamps, he can ask his immediate family members or friends for their stamps if they are not into collecting. Many people just throw away stamps without realizing that there are people who might be interested in them. One might want to ask his grandparents regarding stamps, they may have saved some stamps from years ago. Older stamps are harder to find and most probably more expensive than the common ones which are produced today.

There are certain basic things that a stamp collector needs to be able to do. These things will make someone enjoy stamp collecting and preserve the integrity of his stamps. Whether a collector is a casual stamp collector or a philatelist, these are must-do things in stamp collecting.

A good stamp collector:

- keeps his collections safe

Collecting stamps or anything in general is not about gathering all the items and leaving them somewhere in the corner of a room for it to catch dust or cobwebs. In collecting stamps, the items should be safely kept in a container (usually an album) which will keep them from being damaged or destroyed. The slightest tear or scratch on a stamp will definitely decrease its value.

-has the right supplies

In relation to the previous trait of a good collector, he must have the proper tools to be able to keep his collection safe. Having the right tools doesn't mean spending one's pockets out. Stamp collecting supplies are relatively inexpensive and one can avail them without digging too much into there pockets.

-knows what to collect

There's nothing wrong with collecting any kind of stamp in general, especially if one is just beginning to collect stamps. However, there would come a time that a collector feels the need to specifically target a certain set which he would want to collect. There are many different kinds of stamps which are out there for collecting. There are postage stamps, postal stationery, revenue stamps, first day covers and other stamp collectibles.

If there are duplicate stamps, one might consider selling the duplicates or exchanging them for other kinds of stamps. This will avoid redundancy in the collection and allow it to expand.

-knows how to assess the value of his stamps

Stamps can be very valuable. One needs to have basic knowledge on how to appraise the value of his stamps. He can start by reading stamp catalogs and other detailed informational materials. Stamp catalogs list the price of different kinds of collectible stamps, they also give some nifty facts about certain stamps. One can also ask the help of expert stamp collectors about the values of certain stamps which are not included in the catalogs.

These are just a few traits of a good stamp collector. No matter how one collects or what he collects, the important thing is that he enjoys what he does and finds meaning in it.
